Powerful New Documentary ‘Left Write Hook’ Arrives In Australian Cinemas 24 October

PRESS RELEASE

LEFT WRITE HOOK arrives in Australian cinemas this month, following the World Premiere screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August where it won the coveted Audience Award.

A timely exploration of resilience, expression and healing, this powerful new documentary seeks to reshape and reclaim the narrative around abuse.

From 24 October, screenings will take place in select theatres across Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney.  Special Q&As will also be held in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne locations, giving people the opportunity to engage in panel discussions featuring director Shannon Owen as well as boxing instructor and trauma survivor Donna Lyon – who also serves as producer on the film along with Sweetshop and Green.

The feature documentary explores how the physicality of boxing combined with the emotional power of creative writing can create a space for survivors to release their memories, reclaim their bodies, and imagine new lives for themselves.

The film follows seven survivors of childhood sexual abuse who respond to a call-out to take part in an experimental recovery program. Addressing both the physical and emotional impacts of trauma, the program begins as an eight-week workshop but becomes a multi-year journey that reveals complex histories and unforeseen possibilities.

LEFT WRITE HOOK will screen at Dendy Newtown, Randwick Ritz, Dendy Canberra, Dendy Coorparoo, Dendy Southport, Cinema Nova, Classic Cinema, Cameo Cinema, Sun Yarraville, Wallis Mitcham, and Wallis Mt Barker.

Plus, special Q&As will take place at Dendy Coorparoo (16 Oct), Dendy Southport (16 Oct), Dendy Newtown (26 Oct), ACMI (20 Oct), Cinema Nova (29 Oct), Kino Cinema (31 Oct) and Village Cinema Fountain Gate (25 Nov).

LEFT WRITE HOOK is a Sweetshop & Green production. Major production investment from Screen Australia. Financed with support from VicScreen, Mindaroo Pictures, The University of Melbourne and the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund. Bonsai Films are distributing the film in Australia.
